for my first few attempts at bending jpegs for this gallery, i tried to bend the files straight off my digital camera (or copies of those). but as you can see, the first few bends were rather boring as i was merely pushing pixels around. i tried resizing the image but got the same basic results. but i quickly realized that the compression setting was key. the files were virtually uncompressed when taken straight off the camera, and to get interesting jpeg bends you need high compression. when i resaved the files with high compression (setting 5 or lower in photoshop), i started getting better results.

DSCF0043b.jpg: once i ascertained that high encryption rates were the key to bending these as jpegs, i created a new, second version of this image, encoded at setting 4. all subsequent jpeg bends were done at 800x600: i wanted them big, but small enough that i could view them in a browser and take screenshots. the first image is the actual bent image; the following are snapshots of that image as viewed in various applications on various systems. if you can open the actual bent file and it looks different from all the screenshots, please take a screenshot and email it to me.

DSCF0043d.jpg: after having good results with progressive compression, i revisited this image, resizing to 800x600 and saving with progressive setting 9. the first image is the actual bent image; the following are snapshots of that image as viewed in various applications on various systems. if you can open the actual bent file and it looks different from all the screenshots, please take a screenshot and email it to me.

DSCF0043e.jpg: after having good results with progressive compression, i revisited this image, resizing to 800x600 and saving with progressive setting 10. i had bent this to a point that i liked, then unfortunately i bent it again unintentionally (thinking it was a different file), so i kept on bending. luckily i had a couple captures at the point where i wanted it. the first image is the actual bent image; the next two are the "historical" captures before the accidental bend. the following are snapshots of the final bent image as viewed in various applications on various systems. if you can open the actual bent file and it looks different from all the screenshots, please take a screenshot and email it to me.

when i simply resaved the image in PSD format and tried bending that, it would break ("unexpected end of file"). so i copied it, pasted it on top of itself, and saved as a two-layer PSD file, which i was then able to bend successfully. (it also allowed me to bend both layers at once. this, coupled with running two different versions of photoshop, allowed me to get up to four different "results" with each bend.) when i got to DSCF0043-bent-psd13.jpg, i got to about as far as i could bend the file without completely ruining it, so i started over with a fresh two-layer PSD, and was able to get another 15 "results" out of bending that one.
these files are 1280x960, the same size as the original image.
